Four Aces operations to take over Gold Dust
DEADWOOD - When the sale of the Gold Dust operation and buildings to a group including Four Aces owners closes as expected midway through January, the new management expects to expand marketing efforts. Sale of the Gold Dust properties in Deadwood was approved by the South Dakota Commission on Gaming at a special meeting the last week in January. No price tag was mentioned in public, and the financial records and background reports surrounding the sale are in private commission records that are not open to the public. » read more

Slime plant parking ramp still up in the air
Whether or not the city of Deadwood get involved with a multi-level parking structure between city hall and a proposed entertainment venue at the former slime plant is undetermined. The developers of the Tentexkota entertainment and lodging complex would like the city’s participation in the project so it can hold up to 250 vehicles and motorcycles. Designers would like to hold specialty indoor concerts for crowds of up to 2,500 people inside the building and an adjoining parking ramp would be a convenient asset to the business and the city overall, Cam Lund of Lund Associates said Monday. » read more

Original Franklin Hotel glass transparency donated to Deadwood
An original, and relatively unscathed, glass plate photograph of the Franklin Hotel in Deadwood was recently rediscovered by one of the hotel’s former owners. French Bryan of Spearfish was a co-owner of the Franklin back in the 1970s and early 1980s when major remodeling was being done on the facility. Large-scale statue on tap for July 4 unveiling at President’s Park United States President Barack Obama has been on the job less than a month, but his image has already been immortalized in a permanent statue set for unveiling July 4 near Lead. Conservators survey Clowser Collection at Days Of ’76 Museum
A team of conservators from across the country visited the Days of ’76 Museum last week as part of an initiative to provide proper care for the Clowser Collection. Deborah Long, conservator from the Nebraska Historical Society’s Gerald Ford Conservation Center in Omaha, worked at the museum April 1 – 3 to conduct a detailed conservation survey on objects in the collection including the General Crook’s scout James Twiss’ jacket, firearms and weaponry, artifacts from Deadwood’s Chinatown, saddles and tack, pioneer household goods and furniture, mining equipment, furniture, sculptures, stuffed animal specimens and more. Long examined the artifacts and advise the museum board and staff on procedures necessary to stabilize and care for them, along with an estimated cost for that care. » read more
